Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Prahran but not sure where to start? You are not alone. Most adults feel a mix of curiosity and nerves before their first class. At Melbourne Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we keep thingssimple, friendly, and ego free so you can learn safely and feel welcome from day one. This guide walks you through exactly what happens in your 14-day unlimited trial, what to wear, how classes run, and how to make realprogress in just two weeks.
What your 14-day trial includes
Your trial gives you unlimited access for 14 consecutive days. You can try morning and evening classes, meet the coaches, and get a feel for our community. We stay open through December for pre-holiday stress relief, closing only on public holidays, so you can keep moving and clear your head when life gets busy.
- For an easy start, use our popular early sessions:
Tuesday 6:30am, No-Gi Fundamentals - Thursday 6:30am, Gi Fundamentals
You do not need prior experience. You will learn core positions, safe movement, and simple escapes that work for real people in daily life. Beginners train together in a calm, supportive space.
How classes run, step by step
Each Fundamentals class follows a steady rhythm:
- Welcome and quick brief, what you will learn today.
- Gentle warm up with movements used in Jiu-Jitsu. No hard conditioning or bootcamp drills.
- Technique blocks, the coach demonstrates, you partner up and drill with friendly guidance.
- Optional light positional rounds in Fundamentals. No competitive sparring in beginner classes.
- Cooldown and questions so you leave clear and confident.
Coaches move around the room to help you with small adjustments that make a big difference. We pair you with partners who match your size and experience where possible.
What to wear to your first class
For No-Gi, wear comfortable, pocketless shorts or tights and a fitted t-shirt or rashie. For Gi classes, we have clean loan Gis and belts during your trial. Bring a water bottle and slip-on thongs for bathroom breaks. Tie backlong hair, remove jewellery, and trim nails for safety and comfort.
Safety first, always
Is BJJ safe for beginners? Yes, when taught correctly and trained with care. We focus on control, taps, and clear communication. You will learn how to tap early and often, and your partner will release immediately. Ourmats are clean, the space is well ventilated, and the culture is respectful. If you have an old injury, tell the coach before class. We will modify drills so you can train smart.
Common fears, real answers
- Is 22, 27, 30, 36, 40, 50, 60, or 70 too old to start BJJ? No. Age is not a barrier. We teach a style built on leverage, timing, and technique, not brute force. Many of our members started in their 30s, 40s, 50s, andbeyond. Start at your pace and focus on consistency.
- Do I need to be fit to start BJJ? You get fit by training. Fitness helps, but it is not a requirement. We scale the session to your level, and you take breaks as needed. Technique first, intensity later.
- Is BJJ safe if I am worried about injury? We value longevity. You will learn safe falls, controlled movement, and how to protect your neck and joints. Fundamentals classes do not include hard sparring, whichkeeps your learning curve smooth and your body safe.
How often to train in your first two weeks
Is one or two classes per week enough to see progress? One class a week builds familiarity, but you will progress much faster at two or more. We recommend two classes per week during your 14 days for the best results. That rhythm gives your body time to absorb new skills without overload.
If your schedule is tight, stack a Tuesday No-Gi and Thursday Gi to build routine. Add a weekend session if you want an extra boost.
Your first 14-day progress plan
Our beginner pathway is built around 88 essential techniques, drawn from high-frequency positions. You also get complimentary digital curriculum access with about five hours of content so you can review at home.
Here is a simple roadmap for your trial:
- Days 1 to 3, Focus on base positions, hip movement, safe frames, standing posture, closed guard basics, and side control escapes.
- Days 4 to 7, Add mount escapes, back survival, grip basics, and a simple standing clinch and guard pull. Watch the matching videos before class for better retention.
- Days 8 to 14, Link skills together. Drill a safe takedown or clinch entry, pass from knees, stabilize side control, and finish with a basic submission like a straight armbar or rear choke mechanics.
By the end of two weeks, you should recognise the main positions, feel calmer on the ground, and know how to escape common holds. You will not master everything, but you will feel comfortable stepping into anyFundamentals class.
Inclusivity you can feel
We are a family-owned academy that welcomes all ages and body types. Women train here, parents train here, absolute beginners train here. If you are looking for a supportive environment for womens self-defenceprahran or want to build confidence without the macho vibe, you will feel at home.
