Junior Classes
Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu for Juniors
Juniors Program (10-14years)
There is often much debate about the teaching of martial arts to children. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not a rough or dangerous martial art. In fact, itβs often referred to as the βGentle Artβ. The ground based martial art shows students how to fight on their back without the use of striking or punching. Incorporating the βWinners methodology for childrenβ program we focus on a range of life skills and core values to prepare your child for many of lifeβs highs and lows on and off the mats.

Program Description
While combat sports use fists and elbows as their defence our Juniors Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program teaches students how to control a provoker without hurting them or themselves using verbal assertiveness and non-violent self-defence techniques to stay safe. We do not teach your kids to punch or kick. Juniors are taught escapes, take downs, and passes, and leverage-based control holds to neutralize threats without violence. They are never taught techniques that could be unsafe if not executed properly or responsibly.
In addition to physical health, we have a strong focus on mental health; managing emotional ups and downs of life, self-compassion, communication and relationship skills, and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. We aim to equip your pre-teen and teen with comprehensive skills to navigate the next chapter of their lives.

What People Say
Highly recommend the academy!
My child has been attending for about two years and she can't wait to get on the mats with her friends, learn new things and challenge herself. She loves training with Ivan and I love the changes I see in her both on and off the mats. Ivan is a caring, patient and very dedicated teacher who knows how to engage the kids, bring the best in them and keep the lessons both fun and challenging. The discipline is good, ensuring that the kids are developing their skills and getting better at the art of Jiu Jitsu. A bonus- the facilities are very clean and well maintained and when the weather allows the roller door is open, so there is fresh air.

Brought my 12y daughter down to train with Professor Ivan for a change from our normal BJJ gym to get some practice rolls in before her next comp. Ivan took my daughter under his arm and treated her as one of his own students, going out of his way to make her feel welcome.
He even invited her back to do a private session the following day, not for money but for his passion to teach BJJ. My daughter isnβt one to change routine but she truly loved her time at Melbourne BJJ.
If your looking to get into BJJ I highly recommend giving this gym a go.

Ivan's love of the sport is emulated through his dedication to training and cultivating thorough curriculum that not only teaches the sport but morals and life skills. As my son attended more classes I observed improvements in his confidence organisation and cooperation. He has been training at Melbourne Jiu Jitsu Academy for 4 years and I have loved seeing the academy grow into the community it is today. I highly recommend sending your child to train at Melbourne Jiu Jitsu Academy under the guidance of Ivan's nurturing coaching.

The Academy is an inclusive and supportive environment for all. I remember when I first started how welcoming the other students were. Iβve made many new friends through Jiu Jitsu; it has also taught me so many lessons that are relevant not only on the mats.
